Large Beach Umbrella question by ♦your envy♦: Who is right, me or my husband?
My husband and I have 2 kids – a 3 year old and a 9 month old. We are taking our first family vacation in June (YAY) and we are going to the beach in Florida. I am excited because my kids have never seen the beach or ocean and I think they are going to LOVE it.
Well, a couple of weeks ago my husband mentioned that he don’t think it’s good idea to take our youngest son because he’s so young. (we are going the weekend after he turns 1). He said he thinks he may get sunburned too bad or anything could happen and thinks his skin is too sensitive still and all that. My argument is that I don’t want to go on a family vacation without him. He will have a blast and I have already planned to keep him lathered with sunscreen the entire time. We are also taking a large umbrella so the kids will have shade while playing on the beach. He won’t remember it but, he will have a blast while there. My 3 year old has light skin too, so I think if we are taking him then the youngest one should come too. I am just REALLY looking forward to playing with them on the beach and can’t imagine him not being there.
So, is a 1 year old too young to go to the beach?? How can I convince my husband that he will be okay. Any other tips on how to keep the kids safe while on vacation would be appreciated as well, because, like I said, it’s our first vacation! Thanks in advance!
Thanks guys!! I had a feeling you would side with me on this one
I have already bought him a hat too. I told my husband that in 10 years when we were all looking at Pictures of this vacation I could not explain to my youngest son why he was left behind. Thinking about that breaks my heart. I am hoping he will be walking by then too, so it will be easier on all of us

Hat and a big t shirt and the kid will be fine. Don’t forget the lotion on the top of the feet.

How is it a family vacation without the whole family? As a mom there is no way I’d be able to travel that many miles away and not have my children with me. Sunscreen and a large umbrella are great for keeping the sun off of him as is a nice big hat. Let him go he’ll have a great time and you’ll make memories together as a family.

Go right ahead and take your 9 month old son. You are right. He is going to be fine. Keep both of them lathered and out of the direct sunlight as much as possible.
Artie Lange Fan @ 6:50 am
You are right, I would never leave my 1 yr old behind. Just use strong sunscreen and a hat for him. He’ll be fine. Kids are raised in sunny hot climates all around the world.
zenoma @ 7:19 am
You are all at the same risk for getting sunburned. Use sunscreen like you said. Also, the kids can wear t-shirts and little hats.
We lived 3 miles from the beach until my second child was 4. No problems. Trust your intincts. Protect their skin and don’t take your eyes off of them.
It will be too fun and special to leave your little guy out! Have fun!

I’d take the baby – definately.
Shade, high factor sunscreen, sunhat, loose clothes that cover baby up – he will be fine.

I understand your husbands concern but I would never leave my kid at home when going on a family vacation I think you youngest son should be fine my niece was one last year when we went to the beach and they all had a BLAST!! Just cake on the sunscreen and you can get little surfer shirts for them to wear check out oldnavy.com! I would stay home before not taking both my children!
Good luck!

does your husband think that no one has babies in florida? they LIVE there; your baby will only be there for a few days. he’ll be fine.

You are right.

You can forgo the trip to the beach.
Otherwise, there are sunblock for Kids and for sports or water activities. In addition, you need to cover them up with a nice cap, clothing and sunnies for your 3 y.o. to protect the eye from UV. You can buy sunnies with Mickey Mouse or some other cartoons to encourage your 3 y.o. to keep the sunnies on.
Have fun!

you are definitely right, bring both your kids regardless, for numerous reasons, for starters you will be missing your youngest and constantly be thinking about him.. 1st family holiday together all the snaps and footage you cant let him miss out on that.. myself and my wife went to a friends wedding last year it was abroad and no kids where invited. the 1st couple of days where grand but then we really missed them and said we would never do that again..
we have booked a family holiday in spain (summer time ) my youngest will also just have turned 1 at that stage and we cant wait.. we have bought full swimming suits that just his hands and feet are left exposed trust me you and your husband will regret it

It’s sweet that your husband is so concerned about the baby… As for keeping them safe, in addition to what you already have planned, keep them in your sight, at all times. (I know you already know this.) It’s not over-reacting to do so; it’s the world we live in.
Make sure they don’t eat the sand!
Don’t forget the camera!
Anne @ 11:20 am
My Niece went to the beach when she was one and she LOVED it!! and there were no problems!
Greeneyed @ 11:47 am
get him one of those suits, like the surfer’s wear.(like a t-shirt and shorts but has built in sun protection)like this
http://www.joediveramerica.com/page/JDA/PROD/Wetkid/WSK-72
keep a hat on him and use zinc type sun screen reapplying more often then it say on the bottle.
bring lots of water to keep hydrated.

I think he’s worried having a baby there will spoil the fun and keep you guys from doing things on a whim. He’s using his reasoning as an excuse. Don’t call him out on it though, it’ll just cause arguments. I don’t know about your son, but my son was running and playing at 1 year old so maybe your husband will feel differently in a couple of months when he sees how much a baby changes in that short of amount of time.
Native Texas Momma @ 12:47 pm
Short and simple: You’re right…. hands down. (Sorry hubby!)
Remind him of something called sun screen…. what an awesome invention!!!
Cool Dude @ 1:36 pm
I wouldn’t rely too much on the SPF80 sunscreen (for any of you), but as long as you keep the little squirt in the shade, he should be fine.
And always watch your kids around water!!
tra_gal @ 1:47 pm
Make sure to rent or take an umbrella, plenty of sunscreen. One is a little young to go to the beach. because he will easily get burned a baby skin is very sensitive. Just don’t plan on laying on the beach all day. Definitely limit the time he is exposed to the sun (even with sun screen and shade). Go out on the beach in the early morning plan to leave during the hottest part of the day. My parents always went to the beach every year. I was left with my grandparents until I was five for the same reason’s your husband has.

Hi!
We live near the beach, but rarely go. We plan to go more often this summer, because we went last summer and everyone finally enjoyed it.
First of all, take Sunblock of course. Hawaiian Tropic’s Baby Faces has the highest SPF. Buy the biggest bottle you can, and keep slathering it on both of the children.
Buy them shin length swim trunks (be sure to put a swim diaper under the 1 year old, and also the 3 year old if he is not potty trained). Also, put t-shirts on them. They can swim in the t-shirts. Hats are also a necessity-the wide brimmed ones. Check Target-they have swimwear for babies and toddlers in the baby section.
There are stickers and wrist bands you can purchase, that alert you when they have been in the sun too long. I would look for some of those, and then give them a break from the sun. You can take a little cabana they make for babies with you, an umbrella, or a wagon with umbrella (look on eBay for the Radio Flyer umbrella which clips on any wagon, Radio Flyer brand or not). You could also leave and go have lunch somewhere air conditioned, and then come back.
It might be hard to find since you are going somewhere you are not familiar with, but if possible I would try and find a part of the beach with a tidal pool. This is where we go here locally. The older children (now 11 and
play in the ocean for a very short while, and then usually play in the sand, look for shells, and hang out in the tidal pool with the baby (she will be 18 months later this week, and she had her first beach trip last July and loved it). The water is shallow and warmer, and we also get to look at little marine hermit crabs, fish, etc. that are in there.
Be prepared in case your children do not like the beach. It is very possible. When my son (the 8 year old) was 3, he HATED the beach. The waves scared him, both the noise and the motion when he was in the water. The sand stuck to him and he hated that as well. That is why our family does not visit the beach often, even though it is less than a half hour away. But, again, we did finally all enjoy it last year.
Take a cooler (the wagon will come in handy for carrying everything you need as well) with plenty of cold water to stay hydrated, and snacks-being in the sun tires you out so the snacks will give a burst of energy. Grapes would be great, because they are sweet and have natural sugar (and taste great cold).
I would plan to go check it out the first day, perhaps in the evening when the sun is not directly overhead. Just take the children for a walk and see how they respond. If things go well, plan for an hour or so the next morning, and then take it from there. I would not anticipate spending an entire day at the beach-it will be too much for all of you (especially with the sun). Just keep extending the time you spend there based on how all of you enjoy it.
I hope this helps, and wish you the best! Have fun-with your entire family!
EDITED TO ADD: Also, look for some of those battery operated fans that you can clip on strollers/wagons. They will give all of you a bit of refreshment occasionally.
I apologize for suggesting a couple of things you already had covered-I missed the details the first time I read it, because I was multi tasking.

I live in florida. I have five children and every one of them has gone to beach since they were born (or therebouts). A baby’s skin is no more sensitive than a three year old’s skin and if you take the proper measures to protect him from the sun’s rays then he should be fine.
I suggest sunscreen, a beach unbrella and maybe even a beach tent that the baby could hang out under.
Too much sun is not good for ANYONE but if you are protecting everyone’s skin from GETTING too much sun then there shouldn’t be a problem.
gavi624 @ 3:34 pm
They will be just fine. We live in South FL and I have been bringing my son to the beach almost daily since he was 7 months old. He has fair skin too. I use a sunblock called Blue Lizard (available at CVS) and he has never had a burn. Look for Zinc Oxide and/or Titanium Dioxide on the label of sunblock. These are mineral ingredients that physically block the sun from the skin. Also, I like the Sun Smarties line at onestepahead.com. The clothes have SPF in them.
Have fun and make sure they are drinking lots of fluids.
rosie babayyy @ 4:22 pm
We went to the beach last summer when my oldest was 3, middle was 13 mo, and youngest was a few months. We didn’t bring our youngest, because that was WAY too young..but our one year old did perfectly fine. He didn’t get any sunburn, we brought the playpen and have a protective netting that goes over it, so that worked out really well. He absolutely loved the ocean too, even more so then my 3 year old.
parker_n_mj @ 5:09 pm
You go mom!!
Hubby appears to have a screw loose.
Selar @ 5:25 pm
your husband does realize babies and infants live in Florida right??? They are fine, alive, and not burned up from the sun. Sunscreen, umbrella strollers, wide brimmed hats, all of these things can be your best friend. It is not a family vacation without the whole family.:)
I Am More Than This Avatar @ 5:48 pm
You my lady are 100% right! I am really proud of you for being a great mom!
