How about use a good beach umbrella instead of suntan oil? i want to buy a beach umbrella.

Go ahead. But a beach umbrella doesn’t protect you from UV rays the way tanning oil does. UV bounces off everything, especially the water and sand. Good Luck.

I purchased this clamp on umbrella to use with my chair at Jazzfest in New Orleans this year. Unfortunately, with the first attempt at clamping the umbrella clamp broke. It is a piece of garbage not worth any money.

The umbrella is well-made and very adaptable. It clamps on to virtually any seating surface and provides good shade protection for the user.

This could be a great product if it wasn’t for the cheap clamp which is the whole purpose of this umbrella! The clamp, which has many places for the umbrella to be attached, is poorly made. It’s made of a resin which in itself is strong but it wasn’t molded square ( |_ ). It’s more like ( _ ). Anyway, I hope it stays onto the chair if a strong breeze hits it!

…and you’ll end up with sunburned lips. Try this little goody instead!

My favorite way to spend Sunday morning is on the patio with a big cup of coffee and the NY Times Sunday crossword. Since the patio faces southeast, I get a lot of sun and heat. The time it takes to finish the puzzle is exactly the same as it takes for the kind of sunburn/sunstroke combination that leaves one in pain and speaking in tongues. This umbrella is perfect preventative.

While fairly large, the patio is mostly covered by an overhang, which makes one of those handsome, full-size French Market type umbrellas (which I covet) out of the question. I know this because — not having the kind of brain that acknowledges geometry or whatever math science includes measuring–I bought a 7’6″ umbrella this July and discovered that the overhang is about 6’9″. No amount of McGuivering was gonna make that umbrella fit, so I ended up giving it away (yes, I was too lazy to schlepp to the post office to return it…sue me) and, reluctantly, bought this little guy instead.

The Clamp-on Fiberglass Beach/Rain Umbrella w Vent UPF 50-Pacific Blue Inside is ugly, stubby, and doesn’t look nearly as cool as the khaki French Market number which even had a fancy finial you added to the top (adding even more inches!), but boy does it keep the sun off. The handle has a little vice-grip thingy that screws onto the back of a chair and you can wiggle the umbrella itself back and forth to keep the sun blocked.

At the beach, just jam the handle into the sand and there it stays. It doesn’t blow away, it’s not nearly pretty enough to be stolen, you don’t have to wrestle with it to open it. Closed, it’s of a reasonable length for transporting by car or even bicycle (given sufficient bungee cords and determination), but provides sufficient shade for two people or one person and one cocker spaniel, if you don’t sit too far apart. Or unless the cocker spaniel hogs all the shade, which has been known to happen. And the lunch. Anyway, it’s not French, it’s not pretty, it doesn’t have a finial (we are talking about the Umbrella again, not the cockerspaniel, please keep up). It doesn’t make you look like the cool Campari & Soda type when you sit under it…but for the price, I think you’ll end up loving it.

This personal beach umbrella is just the best. It is adjustable and adaptable in so maney ways, and it doesn’t collapse. If you want one of these, you will save so much money, by not buying multpile $10 beach umbrellas. I am buying one for all my loved ones.

Andy knows what he’s talking about. the beach umbrella is a secondary protection, but you still need generously and frequently applied sunscreen.

*Sombra* @ 7:47 am #

How ’bout use the beach umbrella AND a high-SPF sunscreen LOTION or CREAM?

The umbrella will give you some shade, true … but do you plan to spend all day under it? You still need sunscreen. Oil is low-SPF (some contain NO sunblocking ingredients) and promotes tanning but does nothing to protect your skin from harmful rays.

Boomer Wisdom @ 8:24 am #

The beach is not an “instead of” situation.

The beach is an SPF+beach blanket+parasol+munchies+ice chest full of margaritas.

OK. Now we’re ready…have a blast.

How about a good beach umbrella AND sunBLOCK (at least SPF 30) AND a big fat hat. Nothing ages you faster than the sun. Have you seen how unattractive skin cancer looks? Try to avoid the sun when it does the most harm to your skin, around noon.

I would use both.=)
