Beach Sun Shades question by honeybear: How to keep my kids safe from the sun at the beach?
We are going on a family vacation and I need to know how to keep my kids safe from the sun when we are on the beach. I have a 4 year old and a will be 3 month old. It’s not going to be really hot but warm enough to get in the water. What else other than sunblock can I do to keep them protected? Where can I get one of those huge unbrella’s for shade?
Ok…..we ALL plan on wearing sunblock. Is there something out there for babies or for all of us to keep some shade over us? Something travel size?

you can go to a walmart and get one of those beach umbrellas. And if you also want to protect your kinds from the sun, then give them hats to wear.

You could have the kids wear a loose fitting, light colored t-shirt preferably white or off white maybe with a logo on it so they think that it is cool.
One of those floppy hats are always cool on little kids or a ball cap even if your child is a girl. At least a hat will keep some of the sun off of the face.
You can get one of those big umbrellas at Walmart, I think that they are in the nursery section or any of the hardware stores will have them (Ace hardware, Home Depot, Lowes).
I would also limit how long you are at the beach and what time you are at the beach. During the hottest part of the day, depending on where you are, the hottest part of the day is usually from 11am to 3pm and that is when the sun’s rays are at their brightest. Check at http://www.weather.com and I think they have a UV index for the area that you are going to be in and probably have more information about when to be in and out of the sun.
I am glad that you are going to use sunblock. Get a good brand and a HIGH SPF for the best protection. Weather.com also has some suggestions on sunblock or go to http://www.webmd.com and type in sunblock in the search field and it will give you some ideas.

I went to a skin cancer session here at my job (hospital) & they told me that the BEST way to protect your kids & yourself is to buy clothes with UV protection. You can search for them online. I myself don’t have any, nor for my soon-to-be baby boy, but I might invest in something w/ this protection.
They say that the big umbrella’s, regular clothing or sunblock (not used as instructed, re-applying) doesn’t fully protect you from the sun.
They say that skin cancer is growing to the highest rates.
Maybe I’ll invest in a UV protected thin blanket or umbrella – we’ll see.
