Pop Up Sun Shade question by Proud Mom: Birthday party for a 5 year old….questions on party favors?
So, I’m having my daughter’s 5th birthday party at the beach since it’s in July. I’ve done this for the last 3 years and would like some new fresh ideas…..
It’s going to be like 100 degrees+. I usually go reserve the shaded area and we have huge pop up tent, like a 10×20 for the adults. All the adults come since it’s at the beach (dont want to be responsible for all the children). It’s all my family and a few friends.
My head count is about 20 adults and 18 children. The children range from 4-10 and one 13 year old. It;s going to be at noon so I’m planning on making sandwiches, simple ones with just turkey n cheese and serve them on small rolls or reg rolls cut into thirds. Some fruit like watermelon and grapes, etc, served in small bags. Some bags of chips, and I have someone doing a greek sala. I also HAVE to have a Little Mermaid Cake. Which I assume I’ll just keep in an ice chest?? I’m thinking of just providing water and capri suns because I dont think people need soda on such a hot day (does that sound wrong?)
So….my main questions are any suggestions on food, should I serve it as soon as people get there and get the cake out of the way so it’s not in the heat too long?
PARTY FAVORS: I am soooo clueless as to what to do for party favors since the children vary in age. I don’t want to do candy because t’s expensive, will melt in the sun, and half the parents throw it away anyway. I though about those water noodles??? Or wrapping individual gifts and handing them out at the end. Like at the dollar store, they have bags of lip gloss for all the girls and water guns for the boys? It’s just hard with a mix gender and age range so big. One gift isn’t appropriate for all…….ANY AND ALL SUGGESTIONS PLEASE……….EVEN IF THEY GO FROM WHAT I’VE ALREADY THOUGHT…….
THANK YOU !!!!!
I dont need a lecture on the age group. She is close to her cousins who are 8 and 10 her own sister is 13. and they all play well together. But thanks anyway

Well, girls like water guns too. The only one who might not is the 13 year old.
I actually think it is a really bad idea to have such a big age range. If it was just four and five year olds they would entertain each other and play together. Plus you can give a five year old bubbles or a bouncy ball and they are happy…big kids are hard to please and the five year old wont even care that they are there.
You should do just a party for your child and the friends their age and give favors etc out there and then maybe do just a little cookout or something simple with family. Your child is old enough to have a just friends party and I would never mix the two. I plan on doing two seperate parties for my two year olds birthday party soon.
I definately think the water and capri sun will be appreciated on such a hot day in such a hot location. Use LOTS of ice and try cold foods only like sandwhiches, popsicles, chips, fruit salads, etc. Nothing hot.

I would do the food right away and the cake soon after. Just make sure you have some chips or other ‘cheap’ snacks in case the kids all get hungry later. Running on the beach and playing in the water can make them hungry again and if they food is early they may want a snack later.
I would get some soda. I agree the kids should drink juice or water, but the adults may prefer soda.
Good ‘beach’ party favors would be water guns for everyone or go to the dollar store and buy a shovel, bucket, sand castle set for each, they are only $1 or $2. Or you could get the little ones they sand toys and get the older kids a cheap boogy board, the dollar store has them as well.
What I would probably do is take a bunch of beach toys for the kids to play with: stuff to dig holes and build sand castles, a couple boogy boards, a football, volley ball, soccer ball and frisbee. That should cover all age groups including any adults who want to play, because we all know men are just really big kids. Then give them each a little loot bag full of summer goodies: squirt gun, water balloons, bouncy balls, whistles, etc.

I wouldn’t separate the gifts by gender. You never know which gender would like which gift. Plus, if my kids are any indication, they would always want the one they didn’t get.
Some art supplies could span the age range you’re talking about. Maybe some washable paints and/or markers or other art materials. Kids of all ages could enjoy them. (Just don’t get any crayons; they won’t survive the heat.)

Okay, as for food you’re going to want to have something easy and simple and not very messy id suggest getting 2 or 3 buckets of chicken wings with rolls. As for drinks you’re right on key. And yes you can keep the cake in there but you’re going to want to put it in a separate ice chest.
Party favors: You should just go to the dollar store and get the girls little princess crowns and lip gloss and the boys some water guns and the balls that soak up water and through at people.

You could do something like hand out bubbles (they sell those at the dollar store in packs of 3), water guns, glow sticks (they sell those at Michaels and they don’t have to be frozen), those little fuzzy posters for the girls who are a bit older, those water ball things that you squeeze under water then throw, maybe you could get one of those buckets full of sand toys to split up between a few of the younger kids. I think one thing for each kid is fine, whether it’s wrapped or not.
I would just put the fruit out at the beginning and make the sandwiches later during the party.
Did you already go get the cake? If not, see if there is a place to order one close to where you will be and just go pick it up when it’s time to eat it.
